Desensitisation

Desensitisation Program at McKenzie Park

At McKenzie Park, we understand that confidence and relaxation are key to a happy, well-adjusted horse. Our Desensitisation Program is designed to gently expose horses to new environments, sights, and sounds — helping them become calm, adaptable, and confident in a variety of situations.

Whether your horse is young, green, or simply in need of more exposure, McKenzie Park offers the ideal environment for safe and progressive training. Our facilities include indoor and outdoor arenas, cross-country paddocks, obstacle areas, and a range of unique farm life — including miniature horses, donkeys, and goats — all providing valuable sensory experiences.

Our team offers flexible programs to suit your horse’s needs. We can:

  • Ride or handle your horse through controlled exposure sessions

  • Walk or work in-hand with your horse in new settings

  • Tailor each session to build confidence at your horse’s pace

Desensitisation, also known as confidence or exposure training, helps horses learn to stay calm under pressure, improving safety, performance, and trust between horse and handler.

If your horse tends to be spooky or nervous, we can help them learn that the world isn’t so scary — one calm experience at a time.

Benefits of Equine Desensitisation

How to Desensitise a Horse

  • Start by introducing the horse to the stimulus from a distance.

  • Gradually move closer to the horse as it becomes more comfortable with the stimulus.

  • Use positive reinforcement to reward the horse for its calm behaviour.

  • Be patient and understanding. It may take some time for the horse to become desensitised to the stimulus.
